As we reach the end of Spring Term 1, let’s look back at all the exciting things we’ve learned this term! We’ve learned about toys from the past, practiced maths with doubles and place value, and written stories about lost toys. Let’s see what we’ve discovered!

In history, we’ve been talking about how toys were very different in the past. A long time ago, toys were made from things like wood, metal, and fabric. They didn’t have batteries or lights like toys today. Some toys, like wooden dolls and teddy bears, are still loved by children now, but today’s toys can do so much more!

Now, toys are often made with plastic and can have lights, sounds, and even move by themselves! We have toys like talking dolls and robots that can walk, as well as fun games on our tablets and computers. It’s amazing how toys have changed over time!

Kapoor class have enjoyed learning about the history of toys!

In Year 1, we are learning about two important religions: Islam and Christianity. Both of these religions help people know how to be kind and do good things. Let’s find out more!

Goldsworthy have enjoyed learning about lots of different religions!

What is Islam?
Islam is a religion followed by Muslims. Muslims believe in one God called Allah. The holy book of Islam is called the Qur’an. Muslims pray five times a day, and they go to a mosque to pray.
Fun Fact: Muslims fast during the month of Ramadan, which means they don’t eat or drink during the day.
What is Christianity?
Christianity is a religion followed by Christians. Christians believe in one God, and they also believe in Jesus, who is very special to them. The holy book of Christianity is called the Bible. Christians go to church to pray and learn about God.
Fun Fact: Christians celebrate Christmas to remember the birth of Jesus.
Similarities Between Islam and Christianity: Both religions believe in one God. Both religions have special books: the Qur’an for Muslims and the Bible for Christians. Both religions encourage people to be kind, help others, and share love.

Math: Learning Doubles and Place Value

In maths, we’ve been learning about doubles and place value. Doubles are when we add the same number together, like 2 + 2 = 4 or 3 + 3 = 6. We practiced counting and adding with numbers, and now we are really good at seeing how numbers work!

Place value is all about understanding where digits go in a number. For example, in the number 12, the 1 means ten and the 2 means two. We learned how to use this knowledge to help us count and understand bigger numbers. It’s like knowing how many tens and ones we have in a number!

Writing Stories: The Lost Toy Poster

In English, we wrote stories and published a poster about a lost toy! We imagined what it would be like if our favourite toy got lost, and then we wrote a innovated story of The Lost Property Office by Emil Rand. Some of us wrote about soft cuddly toys, while others wrote about robots or action figures. We used our imagination and described our toys with lots of details, like their colours, sizes, and special features.

Here are some stories:

Our Oracy Journey in Year 1!

This term in Year 1, we’ve also been learning about oracy which t means being good at speaking and listening! Oracy helps us to talk clearly, understand what others are saying, and share our ideas with confidence. It was so much fun thinking about our toys and writing about what we would do if they were lost.

Speaking Skills

In Year 1, we have lots of chances to practice speaking in different ways. We’ve been learning how to:

  • Talk Clearly: When we speak to our friends or teachers, we make sure to speak slowly and clearly so everyone can understand us.
  • Take Turns: We’ve practiced taking turns when talking. It’s important to listen when someone else is speaking, then share our own ideas when it’s our turn.
  • Use Descriptive Words: When talking about something, we’ve learned to use more interesting words! For example, instead of just saying “the toy,” we can say “the soft, cuddly teddy bear.”

This term, we’ve learned so much! We learned about toys from the past and how they’ve changed, practiced our maths with doubles and place value, and wrote exciting stories about our lost toys. It’s been a busy term full of learning, and we’re all ready to keep going next term with even more fun lessons!
