Abanindranath Tagore was the principal artist and creator of ‘Indian Society of Oriental Art’ and the first major exponent of swadeshi values in Indian art, thereby founding the influential Bengal school of art, which led to the development of modern Indian painting.   He was also a noted writer, particularly for children. Popularly known as ‘Aban Thakur’, his books Rajkahini, Budo Angla, Nalak, and Khirer Putul are landmarks in Bengali language children’s literature.

In Year 2 children have the opportunity to write in many different formats, have guided reading and phonics lessons daily, visit the school library to get a book to take home as well as consolidating and progressing their learning in maths through number, shape, data handling and problem solving.

Reading books and reading diaries go home every afternoon and are brought to school every morning. We encourage the children to read every night, and write in their reading diary each time they do so.

PE will take place on Thursdays. Children need a plain white t-shirt and blue jogging bottoms or shorts to change into, as well as suitable footwear.

Homework is given out once a week on a Friday and will be due in the following Friday. If children are finding it difficult, discuss this with the teacher.

Year 2 will perform an assembly about the things they have been learning on the 29th April 2016.  Parents are welcome to attend these.

Autumn Term 1 – The Great Fire of London

This term our topic has been ‘The Great Fire of London’. The children learnt how and where the fire began and what the people had to do as a result of the fire. We used a storytelling approach to help the children remember the sequence of events which took place and this helped them learn and retain key facts linked to ‘The Great Fire of London. They learnt how to keep a diary just like Samuel Pepys did during the tragic event.

Spring Term 1 – Mega Structures

This term our topic is ‘Mega Structures’. During this topic we will be finding out about different mega structures from around the world as well as visiting some local mega structures to look at these in more detail. We will also be testing a range of materials to see which will be most suitable to build a structure. Based on these results we will design and create our own structures.

Autumn Term 2 – People Who help Us

This term our topic is People who help us with a particular focus on ‘Florence Nightingale’.

The children have shown great curiosity in this topic and are asking lots of questions as well as doing research at home to find out more about her life. The children have taken part in role play scenarios to get a better idea on what life was like for Florence Nightingale.

Spring Term 2 – Pirates Ahoy!

Summer Term 2 – Creepy Crawly

This term our topic has been ‘Growing plants’. We have been experimenting to see what plants need to grow healthy and strong.

As our plants have grown we have been recording the changes through photographs, measuring and observational drawings.

We have also been comparing the difference between forests in England alongside rainforests in Australia.

We have been enjoying the story ‘Where the forest meets the sea’ and have transformed our book area into the Daintree rainforest which is the setting from the story.
