Lichtenstein Take a Giant Leap into Space… Through Dance!

This term, Lichtenstein Class have been on an exciting creative journey, exploring our Summer topic: Space, in a completely new way: through dance!

Every Tuesday, we were lucky enough to be joined by Rachele, a talented dance artist, who has collaborated with the Akram Khan Dance Company for this project. With her expert guidance, we transformed our knowledge of space into expressive, powerful movement sequences that told the story of our solar system.

Together, we explored how planets orbit the sun, using circular and spiralling movements to bring this celestial dance to life. We dived into the moon phases, using shape, direction, and stillness to reflect the waxing and waning of the moon.

Our performance vocabulary also expanded; both in science and in dance! We focused on key terms like asteroids, gravity, and the speed of light, thinking carefully about how these concepts could be represented with our bodies. For example, we experimented with weight, pull, and resistance to embody the force of gravity, and used bursts of sharp, fast movements to show the incredible speed of light.

Then, on Friday, we had the incredible opportunity to perform our piece at Spotlight in front of an audience of many schools and headteachers. It was an absolute joy to see what other schools had created for their topics, each performance was full of creativity, energy and meaning. We felt proud to be part of such an inspiring celebration of learning and the arts.

Here are some moments captured of our performance:

This project has not only deepened our understanding of space, but has also helped us develop our imagination, confidence, creativity, and teamwork. We can’t wait to do more projects like this in the future!

Well done, Lichtenstein Class, you have danced your way across the universe!

Thank you to Akram Khan Dance Company for this opportunity and huge thank you to Rachele!
