This term in Year Two, we are learning about authors and the joy of creating imaginative stories. We are asking ourselves What makes a good story? and we are also exploring how to read with more expression.
We’ve discovered that reading isn’t just about saying the words correctly — it’s also about how we say them.
Simon: If a character is happy, we can smile and read with a cheerful voice.
Maria: If something surprising happens, we can make our voices show the surprise.
Nahiya: Reading with expression helps us understand the story better and makes it more fun for our listeners too!
What We’ve Learned So Far:
- Use punctuation like full stops, question marks and exclamation marks to guide our voices.
- Change our tone to match the mood of the story.
- Make our reading sound natural
This week’s challenge was to pick our favourite chapter from our stories and to practise reading it aloud to a partner. We tried to use different voices for the characters and even added some actions! When we watched a video of our whole class, we made some reading goals:
- Pause at punctuation.
- Match our voice to the feeling of the sentence – but try not to shout.
- Practise tricky words so we can read smoothly.
- Record ourselves reading again to listen and improve.
On Friday, we will be reading to year three, so we will keep practising and sharing.
Amal: We all want to keep improving, so we’re working hard.
We realised that we are all at different stages in our expression journey, but that’s okay. With practise, listening, and feedback, we know we’ll get better and better.
