World Book Week is always a magical time of year, a chance to celebrate the power of storytelling and imagination. This year, we brought the beloved tale of Superworm by Julia Donaldson to life in a very special way—by taking it into our Forest School! This engaging and rhythmic story about a heroic worm and his woodland friends provided the perfect inspiration for an outdoor adventure filled with creativity, exploration, and hands-on learning.

Forest School provided the ideal setting to immerse ourselves in the world of Superworm. We gathered around for a lively storytelling session, surrounded by nature, where the children joined in with repeated refrains and acted out the story. The outdoor setting helped them visualise the characters in their natural habitats: wiggly worms, slimy toads, and scuttling beetles all became part of our learning experience.

Inspired by Superworm’s bravery and helpfulness, we embarked on a real-life worm hunt! The children carefully explored the soil, lifting logs and gently sifting through the leaf litter to find wiggly creatures beneath. We discussed the important role worms play in keeping the soil healthy, just like Superworm does in his story.

Bringing Superworm into Forest School was a fantastic way to celebrate World Book Week. It reinforced the idea that stories aren’t just meant to be read; they can be lived and experienced in the world around us. The children left with muddy hands, big smiles, and a deeper appreciation for nature and literature.
