Some year 5 pupils have been working on a Primary Engineering project in which they have been building a vehicle. The type of vehicle is a Tipper Truck. They have used various strong materials such as wood, plastic, and cardboard to make the main body of the vehicle. First, they built the base (which is called the chassis). Then, they added wheels to the chassis. Following this, they proceeded to build the body of the truck. They added a front face and back to their trucks. The back had to tip down to throw out the rubbish, so they used a plastic pipe to attach a balloon to it. They placed this under the tipper side so that when they blow into the balloon, it rises to make the back of the truck tip over. It was a great, fun challenge. Children used lots of skills to build their trucks such as cutting, measuring, sawing, following a set of instructions, problem solving (when their trucks didn’t tip back far enough). They are in the final design, which is to decorate their tipper trucks, where we are seeing some creative, imaginative ideas come to life. On Thursday, they will be attending a grand celebration event to showcase their work at the prestigious Glaziers Hall in London Bridge. Watch this space for photos of the event.
