What is the point of compost?
Compost Enriches and Builds Healthy Soil
Adds organic matter to the soil and increases the nutrient content and biodiversity of microbes in soil. Conserves water and reduces water use by helping soils retain moisture. Helps prevent soil erosion by reducing soil compaction and runoff.
We started with a tub of pear, orange, banana and pepper.
We asked; What would happen to the fruit and vegetables if we did not eat it and just left it here? The children talked in their partners and agreed it would go rotten or bad.

First, we talked about what we know about composting. Then we watched a video of fruit and vegetable decomposing.
The next day, we looked at the fruit and vegetables and could see they were starting to soften and go brown. The orange was drying out.

Then we thought about, and discussed in our partners, what we would like to find out. We came up with questions.
(Note: we record the questions how they were asked and we only change statements into questions)

To supplement our learning, and because we love Peppa Pig, we enjoyed watching Grandpa composting in his garden.
Tiny bugs and worms break down the food scraps. Idris
Finally, we made a prediction about what will happen to each of the fruit and veg over the next few weeks.
