This week has been Maths Week, and it’s been packed with excitement, laughter, and loads of hands-on learning! We explored math like never before, diving into shapes, numbers, and puzzles that turned our classroom into a playground of ideas.

In Year 2, we’ve been exploring tangram shapes. If you’re not familiar with them, tangrams are an ancient Chinese puzzle where you use seven specific pieces, or “tans,” to create different shapes and designs. We challenged ourselves to build all kinds of things—cats, dogs, fish, houses, and even our own unique animals! It was wonderful to see the creativity come alive as everyone tried to figure out how to fit each piece just right.

Then, we switched gears to an energetic math game that kept everyone on their toes! Here’s how it went:

  1. We spread 20 calculation cards around the room. Each card had a different math problem on it.
  2. The children teamed up in pairs, and each pair started at a different calculation card. Their mission was simple but exciting: solve each calculation and follow the answer to their next card!
    • For example, if a team started at question card 6 and solved the problem 20 – 9, they’d get 11 and then dash off to card number 11!
  3. They kept going, card to card, solving and moving. If they solved everything correctly, they’d end up right back where they started!

This activity was a race, too—so the first group to complete the course correctly was crowned the winner! It was a fantastic way to practice math skills, get active, and enjoy a little friendly competition.

Maths Week has been an absolute blast, and we’ve seen so much growth in confidence and skills. Thank you for your support in making this such a special experience for the children. We hope they came home excited to tell you all about their new math adventures!

Take a look below at some of the highlights of the week.

“The more that you can make learning enjoyable, the more your mind will grow.”

This quote reflects the heart of Maths Week, where we embraced the joy of learning, and through play, teamwork, and creativity, the children’s minds were free to explore and grow. When learning is fun, it becomes a journey of discovery that leaves a lasting impact, sparking curiosity and a love for knowledge that lasts well beyond the classroom.

It’s a beautiful reminder that the most powerful learning happens when we enjoy the process!
