This term in Science, year 4 are learning about Sound. So far, they have explored a variety of sound sources such as tuning forks, hangers on strings and some instruments such as recorders, shakers and tambourines. They learned that sound is produced because something is made to vibrate eg the air in the recorder, the beads inside the shaker or the bells on the tambourine. They also learned that sound can travel through solids, liquids and gas. They saw this by listening to the sounds that travelled in the air, seeing the effect of the vibrating tuning fork when it was placed in water and they also were able to hear sounds travel thorough their tables when they put their ears to the table. Did you know that sound in measured in decibels? They used a decibel meter to measure their quiet voices as opposed to their shouts! They saw a clear difference in the numbers: their quiet voices were about 50 decibels but their shouts made the reader go up to 109 decibels! They will continue to learn more about Sound. Please ask them questions at home to help them consolidate their knowledge and tell you how much fun they had! The smiles say it all!
