This Year 5 example is inspired by Derek Haylock’s Making Connections (2007) and encompasses our concrete-pictorial-abstract approach whilst highlighting the importance of language as being a scaffold to learning.
Our working walls reflect current learning, which includes Star Words and key models and representations.
Year 3 have become frequent Battle of the Bands class winners and have included a Times Tables Rock stars display to their working wall to pose for a picture with the trophy.
Year 4 have been enjoying securing their times table facts and applying their knowledge to worded problems. Bar models are used throughout the school as a visual representation of the structure of maths.
During Maths Week, children enjoyed problem solving with geometry. In Year 3, they used a range of strategies including ‘finding all possibilities’, ‘visualising’ and ‘pattern spotting’.
Children and adults throughout the school explored different arrangements and representations of 3 through number, stories, geometry and art during Maths Week. As well as number hunts, there were estimation challenges, problem solving activities and participation in virtual workshops.
