Monday 10th February, four wonderful mathematicians from Year 5 attended a Maths Problem solving competition at Guildhall. Representing East London and the only school from Tower Hamlets in attendance, our fearlessly focussed problem solvers took on five different mathematical tasks in pairs to accumulate points.
Fatima from Year 5:
‘We worked in pairs to solve a range of maths problems including number, puzzles and geometry. We used tangrams to make squares, rectangles and triangles.
For the first game, we used a calculator to use any operation to make a certain number. This activity was similar to Countdown and was really fun.
One challenge we had to use dominoes to make each side equal a number we were given. This one was bit difficult because sometimes we couldn’t find the dominoes we needed. We needed to change some pieces to find a solution.
The last game we were really successful. We had to find many solutions from the start to the finish line and my partner and I found so many solutions – we found this activity easier than I thought it would be. Participating in the competition has made me want to explore maths problems, games and puzzles. I have also joined Ms. Bennett’s Maths Problem Solving Club and I can’t wait to get started.’
