Year 5 got experimental this afternoon testing different substances to see if they were soluble or insoluble. After designing a fair test, we measured out 6 half cups of water, placed two spoons of substance in each cup and stirred. The substances we tested were: Sugar, salt, sand, flour, coffee and pepper.

At first, it looked like the pepper and flour dissolved because the water changed colour but we soon realised that after a short while, the particles had all sank to the bottom of the cup. This meant they had not dissolved and so were insoluble. We found out that sugar, salt and coffee were soluble because no particles could be seen in the liquid.

“The solution is clear, that means sugar is soluble”
