Today, Year 3 tested different materials to decide which would make the best sunglasses.

We tested black paper, foil, clear plastic and coloured plastic. We tested them by putting them in front of our eyes and seeing how much light pass through. If too much light passed through then the material would not protect our eyes. If no light passed through then we would not be able to see!

The clear plastic was translucent – this means it would not block any light and so would not be good for protecting our eyes.

Our conclusion: The best material to make our sunglasses from would be the coloured plastic, this is because it is translucent. This means that it would let some light in so we could still see but block some of the light to protect our eyes from damage. However we can never look at the sun directly, even with sunglasses on!
