In Hamilton class we are enjoying learning all about Ramadan.
We have talked about what happens during the month of Ramadan. The children knew lots about fasting and enjoyed drawing their own favourite Iftar food.
What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is the ninth month on the Islamic calendar, which marks important holidays and events for Muslims (people who practice Islam). During Ramadan people fast, or refrain from eating and drinking, while it’s light outside. Once the sun sets, families meet for big meals that may include stew, rice, dates, lentils, and more. People also have a morning meal before the sun rises.
For the hundreds of millions of Muslims around the world who observe Ramadan, the month is a time to focus on their faith and also perform generous acts. People raise money and donate supplies to help others in need. And many fast to remind themselves about those in the world who don’t have enough to eat.
Making food with playdoh and Islamic cutters:
Breaking your fast with delicious food happens when the sun has set. Here are our ‘breaking the fast’ foods.
All about Mosques:
We enjoyed building Mosques in our construction area. As you can see they are very elaborate. We learned that you do not wear your shoes in a Mosque, and that you wash your hands and feet before entering the main room. We also learned that you pray at the Mosque and read a yellow or blue book. The adults will read from the Qu’ran, which is the sacred book that must not touch the ground.
Here are our Mosques, Aamaya is dressed up and reading our class Qu’ran.
Decorating our classroom:
We are all making a lantern for our class. In the Muslim faith this means that the light is guiding the way.
What are our good deeds?
We discussed and brainstormed good deeds. The children has lots of ideas here are some. Enjoy!
