In year 2, children explored different problem solving strategies while enjoying maths this week. We decided to focus on conjecturing as we realised that starting by discussing what we know is a valuable first step. The children used this to understand the problem before they planned how to solve it, then they shared sensible predictions and made good attempts at justifying their ideas.
The children’s different ideas about how to solve the problem also meant they used a range of resources to help them.
Our reflections at the end of the lesson gave us the opportunity to consider what we had learnt about approaching a problem, and were able to evaluate whether our plans were a success.
