We went on a guided audio walking tour of our local area. The walk was created to commemorate the historical event in Poplar. The rates rebellion took place in 1921. George Lansbury was one of the men who was arrested for asking Poplar residents not to pay the rates to the Government because they could not afford it.

The Lansbury Heritage Hotel. It used to be the Poplar town Hall. George Lansbury suggested that the refuse to pay the rates. They chose to spend the money on the poor people in their community.
