It’s science week so we have been participating in STEAM (Science, technology, engineering, art and maths) activities throughout the week.

We started the week with some science experiments relating to materials, their properties and changes of states of matter (dissolving).

Alisha, Melissa, Ayaanah and Mysha working together as scientists!
Mixing and observing

We mixed different substances to see which ones dissolves in water (soluble) and which ones did not (insoluble). We were working scientifically on our observing skills by looking closely at the water to see if we could still see the substance.

Mohammed checking if he can still see the salt.
Ishmam and Mariya focussing on their observation.
Khyrah’s group added flour to the water, which we found out was insoluble.

We found out that flour, sand and pepper are insoluble because they do not dissolve in water. Coffee, salt and sugar were soluble. They did dissolve. We discussed how dissolving is when it looks like it has disappeared but it is still there in the mixture. A solution has been formed.

Our class experiment!

Later in the week, we took part in some art by modelling clay pots!

Meliha and Mohammed working hard
Discussing clay pot designs
Alisha carving her clay base

Finally, today Kahlo class did lots of maths problem solving activities to finish off the week of STEAM!

This included code breaking skills (creating and cracking cipher codes!), quick times table knowledge and problem solving using dominoes.

Sara and Nazifa playing the 24 game
Khyrah de-coding a hidden message
The class worked in their pairs to crack the code, then it was their turn to create their own…
Ifaz and Natasha worked collaboratively to crack the hidden code and solve the clue!
Checking the cipher code carefully
Whole class code breaker!
Overall, we’ve had an excellent and fun week exploring Science, Art and Maths!
