The children in Reception are starting to explore the world of numbers using the concept of partitioning. Partitioning helps children break down numbers into smaller manageable parts. To teach this we have been using the ‘Part-Part-Whole’ model. This provides a hands on and visual way to understand how numbers work together. This concept allows children to see how numbers can be split into two parts to make a whole. We have been using this concept in our math learning and provision to make early math learning both fun and meaningful. When children explore partitioning using the part-part-whole model, they are essentially discovering and practicing number bonds. By breaking numbers down into smaller parts, children can see how each part fits together to form a whole, helping them build a solid understanding of number relationships. This is a key skill they’ll carry with them as they move into more complex math, like addition and subtraction.
