Year 2 Get Hands-On with Healthy Eating in DT!
Today in Design and Technology, our Year 2 children had a fantastic opportunity to get creative in the kitchen by making their very own fruit salads! This exciting activity wasn’t just about enjoying a tasty treat – it was also a chance to develop important life skills.

Before we began, everyone got ready like real chefs — we rolled up our sleeves, tied our hair back, and made sure our hands were sparkling clean. The children took these steps seriously, showing a great sense of responsibility and pride in working safely and hygienically.

As part of the lesson, the children learned how to safely and confidently use kitchen tools, including techniques like the bridge hold and claw grip to help them chop fruit with care. These practical skills are not only fun to learn but also valuable foundations for safe cooking in the future.
The classroom was full of smiles as the children selected their favourite fruits, practiced their cutting techniques, and proudly tasted their colourful creations. It was a joyful and delicious way to combine healthy eating with hands-on learning! And the best part? We even got to enjoy our fruit salads at the end — a well-earned and delicious reward for all our hard work!
“Learning is even more fun when you can eat it!”
Please listen to the children’s reflection on the fruit salads!

Why not encourage your child to show off their new cutting skills at home? With their growing confidence and safe techniques, you might just discover a budding little chef in your own kitchen — ready to help, learn, and create delicious dishes together!
