Year 4 have been exploring structures within design technology, through the annual Architecture in Schools project. Children have worked alongside professional architects from Orms Designers and Architects Ltd, and have been guided through the design process of an architect.
Technical knowledge has been developed – through exploring existing architecture on a site visit to the Tower of London together, to designing buildings and making models. Shell structures were explored through manipulating existing packaging (boxes) and children also creating their own. We learned that buildings are designed with the purpose and the user in mind.
Year 4 designed an environment inspired by the architectural features and location of the Tower of London, but with the addition of play parks, a swimming pool, towers with tall walkways, and a coffee shop where you are served by a yeoman. The coffee is free too.
