This week in Shireen class, we’ve been diving into the world of floating and sinking—and what a splash we’ve made!
We kicked off our learning with a fun science experiment, exploring a range of everyday objects to see which would float and which would sink. Before testing each item, the children made thoughtful predictions, using what they already know about materials from our previous learning. There were plenty of surprises and lots of excited discoveries as we tested our theories!

The children then became boat designers! Using recycled materials like yoghurt pots, bottle lids, cardboard and straws, they carefully constructed their own boats. They had to think about which materials would help their boat stay afloat—putting their learning into practice in a wonderfully creative way.
Once our boats were ready, we tested them in water to see if they would float. The excitement was high as boats were launched and everyone watched closely to see the results. This led to some brilliant discussions about why some boats floated and others sank—and what we might do differently next time.
It’s been a fantastic week full of curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
