This term, our Reception children have been busy exploring the exciting topic of Planting and Growing! We’ve been learning about what plants need to grow and have even had a go at planting our own sunflower and cress seeds. The children have loved getting their hands dirty, carefully watering their pots, and watching for those first little shoots to appear. It’s been a fantastic way to spark curiosity about nature and develop care and responsibility through hands-on learning. We handed over our sunflower pots to care for at home, at the end of last half term and can’t wait to see how tall our sunflowers will grow!
We’ve also been learning about the life cycle of a seed – from tiny seed to growing shoot, then into a flowering plant that produces more seeds. It’s been amazing for the children to watch this cycle begin right before their eyes and understand how plants grow and change over time.

Exploring Planting & Growing through play and art.
As part of our planting and growing topic, the children have enjoyed exploring flowers in our continuous provision. They’ve been busy creating observational drawings and paintings, carefully looking at real flowers to capture their shapes and colours. We’ve also had fun using playdough, encouraging creativity and fine motor skills as the children made their own petals and plants. These activities have encouraged he children to look more closely at the natural world around them.
