We have been reading a new story this week in year 5: The Selfish Giant!
In the story, some children are enjoying a beautiful garden, when the giant comes home and spoils their fun. He does not want to share his garden so he banishes them, builds a wall and puts up a sign saying “trespassers will be prosecuted”.
Unsurprisingly, the children are very sad about this and miss the wonderful garden. He is a very selfish giant!
Today, Kahlo class acted out the beginning of the story to show the different emotions.
First, they were relaxing and playing in the lovely garden:
Then, the giant came and said in a gruff voice, “what are you doing here?” And the children felt frightened….
The giant built a wall to keep them out and put up a rather unwelcoming sign…
The poor children were miserable, bored and deflated….
We discussed what it means to be selfish, which is now our “word of the week”.
Can you think of any other selfish characters in books you’ve read?
