What is a School Council?
The School Council is an inclusive programme for all children, where by the school council members are voted for by the children themselves in in-class elections. The School Council members are then responsible for hosting class meetings with meaningful agendas, at least once every half term, and communicating the thoughts and ideas, between the children, Headteacher and Governors in the school. The class meetings are a time where the whole class can discuss:
Ways the school can be improved
Local, community or global issues that they might want to engage with
School Calendar – Discuss school events, anti-bullying week, Children in Need etc
The advantages of becoming a school council member are abundant. The children are empowered with their ability to make a change, making their voices heard and taking responsibility for our learning environment. Taking part in the class meetings, council meetings and other school projects will develop their confidence and assertiveness, whilst learning and experiencing first-hand how democracy works.
