On Friday 10th October, Year 6 went on a visit to the Shadwell fire station to take part in the Tower Hamlets junior citizenship scheme.

We set off together from Langdon Park station and, when we safely arrived at the station, we began our activities immediately. There were 6 stations, each an important aspect of what being a member of society means.

Learning about road safety from the police officer. Maimouna very cleverly told us that the spots where the lorry drivers can’t see us are called the ‘blind spots’!
We also learnt that if cycling at night, you must have your lights on at the front and back because it is illegal not to have them!

Learning all about Dr A.B.C! Our lovely helpers had to stay still for 12 whole minutes!

Some of the members of Hadid class also wanted to share their thoughts and feelings.

“Today, we went to the London fire station, the LFB. We learnt a lot about what to do during a fire. We learnt that we should always use the back of our hands to check the handle of the door. If it is hot, do not use the door. Instead, open the window, shout for help and call 999.”

“Today we went to Shadwell fire station, and one of our session was what to do if we see someone that has fallen down and was in danger. First shout if they’re okay. If they don’t respond, you go to them and place your hand on their chin and on their forehead to free their airways like this.”
