In Year 5, we have been learning all about the London Docklands. So far, we’ve discovered how busy the docks once were, with ships bringing goods like tea, sugar, and spices from around the world.
We also learned about the East India Company and the important role it played in trade. It was amazing to see how much power and influence the company had in the past.
Our P4C (Philosophy for Children) lessons have also helped to deepen our understanding of our topic. Having explored what life was like for the people who lived and worked in the communities around the docks, we have been able to develop our own big question: “What makes a community thrive during times of change?” During our P4C discussions, we shared different perspectives, and listened carefully so that we could build on each other’s ideas about fairness, resilience and teamwork. This helped us connect our historical learning to bigger ideas about how communities adapt and support one another, and we realised that the values of cooperation and respect that shaped the Docklands in the past are still important in our lives today.
