What a great start to the week we had in Year 3 on Monday! Our Design and Technology day was bursting with hands on excitement, creativity and plenty of proud smiles. The classroom was alive with focus and enthusiasm as the children immersed themselves in the art of basket weaving, a skill that has been passed down through human history for thousands of years.
Throughout the day, the children explored weaving using a range of materials, carefully threading, bending and shaping their baskets with growing confidence. It was lovely to see how quickly they picked up the techniques and how determined they were to perfect their patterns.
Alongside the practical work, the children took time to reflect thoughtfully on the bigger picture:
Why did people in the Stone Age weave baskets?
How do we still use baskets in the modern world?
Their discussions were insightful and showed just how deeply they are beginning to understand the connections between past and present.
To make the experience truly their own, each child also designed a unique basket. They considered colours, patterns, and the materials needed to bring their ideas to life. Seeing their creativity unfold was one of the highlights of the day!
We are so proud of their team work, hard work, imagination and willingness to take on a new challenge. It was a day filled with discovery and a reminder that even ancient skills can inspire modern minds.
“Every stitch, every strand, every weave tells a story of patience, creativity and the hands that dare to try.”
