What an incredible half‑term it has been for Year 3! This Spring 2, our learners have been busy exploring the wonders of Ancient Civilisations, developing their writing skills through The Iron Man, becoming confident mathematicians, and growing as collaborative, curious thinkers. We are so proud of everything they have achieved!
History – Exploring Ancient Civilisations
Our big question this half-term was:
“What do all ancient civilisations have in common?”
The children travelled back in time to explore Ancient Sumer, The Indus Valley, Ancient Egypt and The Shang Dynasty of China.
They learned how these civilisations:
- Built cities with organised streets
- Developed writing and number systems
- Invented incredible technologies like chariots, paper, irrigation systems and early sewer networks
- Lived near rivers, used laws, built defences and created public buildings
The children worked as historians, looking at real evidence, asking deep questions and comparing similarities across the four civilisations. Their timelines showed their growing understanding of how history fits together.
Geography
Where in the World?
Using atlases, Year 3 located all four ancient civilisations on a world map.
They studied:
- Latitude and climate
- Physical features
- Why rivers were vital for survival and trade
Children made fantastic connections and many pointed out that civilisations chose to live in the same kinds of places people still choose today!
English
The Iron Man by Ted Hughes
Year 3 became authors, poets and storytellers this term.
Recount Writing
Inspired by The Iron Man, children wrote diary entries in the voice of Hogarth. They explored:
- Fronted adverbials
- Descriptive language
- Past tense
- Sentence variety (simple, compound, complex)
- Emotions and inner thoughts
They planned, drafted, edited and published beautiful pieces filled with imagination and detail.
Maths
Length, Fractions & Measures
In Maths, Year 3 built strong foundations in practical, real-life learning.
Length & Perimeter
They learned how to:
- Measure in metres, centimetres and millimetres
- Convert between units
- Compare, add and subtract lengths
- Understand and calculate perimeter
Practical measurement tasks around the classroom really helped make the learning come alive.
Fractions
The children explored:
- Unit and non‑unit fractions
- Denominators and numerators
- Fractions on a number line
- Equivalent fractions using bar models
- Fractions of amounts
They are now noticeably more confident explaining fractions using the correct mathematical vocabulary.
DT
Basket Weaving Day!
A huge highlight was our DT Weaving Day, where children learned traditional weaving techniques used by ancient civilisations. They showed teamwork, patience and creativity while making their own baskets. The pride on their faces was unforgettable!
Computing
Branching Databases
Children learned how to:
- Create yes/no questions
- Identify attributes
- Build and use branching databases
- Present information in different ways
They enjoyed working logically and thinking like computer scientists!
RE
Festivals and Feelings
In RE, children learned about:
- Lent
- Ramadan
- What matters most to believers during festivals
They showed sensitivity, curiosity and respect- qualities that will help them throughout life.
Eid Parties & Easter Hat Parade- Celebrating Our Community

We ended the half‑term with two beautiful celebrations that reflect everything we love about our Lansbury Lawrence community.
First, our Eid parties filled the classrooms with colour, laughter and generosity. Children shared food, stories and traditions with pride and it was wonderful to see how respectfully and joyfully everyone came together. The sense of belonging and togetherness was felt all around.
Then came our much‑anticipated Easter Hat Parade! The creativity was incredible- from colourful springtime designs to imaginative handmade creations, Year 3 walked proudly wearing hats they had crafted with such care. Everybody clapped, smiled and celebrated every single child.
These moments truly show what makes our school so special.
At Lansbury Lawrence, we celebrate all festivals with the same enthusiasm, pride and joy. Our children grow up understanding that every culture, every tradition and every story matters and when we celebrate together, our community becomes even stronger.
What a wonderful way to end the term.
