This morning, Year 2 had a fantastic time in Design & Technology as we learned how to bake our very own bread. The classroom was filled with excitement, and children talked about linking their learning to our topic: Why was the Great Fire of London significant?

We found out that the Great Fire of London began in Thomas Farriner’s bakery on Pudding Lane. To help us imagine what a busy bakery might have been like for Mary and her family, the children became bakers for the morning! They explored how bread was made in the past and compared it with how we bake today.

Before we started, we talked about the importance of good food hygiene, like:

  • Washing hands with hand soap
  • Wiping our tables clean
  • Tying back long hair
  • Not touching our faces while cooking

The children remembered these rules and kept their baking areas tidy.

Everyone was proud of their end product!

Once, our work stations were clean, children carefully measured and combined flour, yeast, salt, and warm water. We discussed the purpose of each ingredient and asked questions about the texture of the dough. Yusra U said her dough was too sticky because she poured too much water in her bowl. So, she added more flour to make it into a stable ball. Many children enjoyed kneading and moulding their dough into their desired shape.

Baking trays were ready for us to bake our lovely bread!
Muad- “Smells delicious!”

The children were delighted to eat their bread at home time, and it was lovely to see how happy it made them.

Thanks for reading our blog!
