What a fantastic start to the year in Hepworth Class!

We began by working together to create our class contract. As a class, we discussed what we wanted our classroom to be like and agreed on the values that are important to us. We talked about being respectful, committed, and safe. Once we had agreed on our Class Contract, everyone signed their names to show their commitment to making our classroom a positive and happy place to learn.

This week, Year 3 have also been learning about the famous artist and sculptor Barbara Hepworth. We explored her artwork and discussed the different shapes, forms and patterns she used in her sculptures.

To create our own Barbara Hepworth inspired artwork, we designed and made front covers for our books. First, we used clay to mould a variety of different shapes, thinking carefully about how Hepworth created interesting forms in her sculptures. We experimented with curves, holes and smooth surfaces to make our pieces unique. Some children found it challenging to mould the clay using only their palms and thumbs, as the clay was quite firm at first. However, they showed great resilience and perseverance. For example, Yaqub Miah found it tricky to shape the clay, but he said that he kept rolling it over and over again until it became soft and mouldable. This determination helped him create a piece that he was proud of.

Once the clay had dried, we painted our sculptures using a range of colours. We took great care when painting to make our artwork stand out on our book covers.

We are very proud of our finished creations and enjoyed working as artists, just like Barbara Hepworth. Our front covers show lots of resilience, imagination and amazing sculpting skills. Have a look at what they made below!
