Today we applied our understanding and knowledge of ratio to solve ratio problems. After reading the problem, we had to make it with counters to understand the structure of the problem. Once we made it we could establish the value of one part – this we learnt is called unitising.

Once we were confident with counters, we drew our representations into our books, which helped us solve more challenging problems that included fractions. One pictorial diagram enabled us to answer a range of questions from the same problem such as: how many more? How many altogether? What is the difference? If I add 5 more what is the new ratio?
