To celebrate British Science Week, Kahlo class immersed themselves in all day Science. The strand of Science they focused on was Chemistry. The unit was all about properties of materials and their uses. Today, pupils spent the first half of the day learning about different ways to separate materials. These are through evaporation, sieving and filtering. They worked as scientists by conducting a practical filter-making challenge using plastic bottles, filter paper, rocks, sand and dirty water. Their filters came out fantastic and were fit for purpose! in the afternoon, they learned about reversible and irreversible changes, when materials that are mixed together. They explored practical learning by mixing vitamin C tablets into water to see the chemical reaction happen. Then they mixed vinegar with bicarbonate soda to see another chemical reaction happen. Finally, they cooked popcorn kernels by heating them in the oven, which resulted in popcorn being made. All three practical’s taught them about irreversible changes. They created double page spreads with notes, drawings, photos, tables with information and finally, their reflections about their learning journey! Take a look below.
