This week in Reception, we have been busy exploring the exciting world of sinking and floating! To begin, we talked about what these words mean. The children learned that floating means an object stays on top of the water while sinking means an object goes down to the bottom of the water. To truly understand these ideas, we had to investigate for ourselves!
Experiment 1: What Will Sink or Float?
Our first experiment involved testing a variety of objects and materials. Before placing anything in the water, the children made predictions about what they thought would happen – Would it float? Or would it sink? We had a wide range of thoughtful (and sometimes surprising!) guesses. Then came the exciting part – testing each object to see if our predictions were correct. The children loved observing the results and comparing them to their ideas.
Experiment 2: Boat Building Challenge
For our second experiment, the children became young engineers! They used recycled materials brought from home, such as plastic and cardboard, to design and create their own boats. Once the boats were ready, Hamilton Class gathered together to make predictions once again – this time about their friends’ creations. Would the boats float? Or would they sink?
There was a lot of excitement as we tested each boat in the water. The children were thrilled to see which designs were successful and which ones needed a bit more thinking. Some boats floated brilliantly, while others quickly sank—but every outcome was a great learning opportunity!
