Science Week is in full swing, and Reception have been busy stepping into the shoes of real scientists. Both Shireen and Hamilton Class had the chance to explore the different environments found around our world; mountains, beaches, and this week’s favourite… volcanoes.

The children were fascinated to learn that magma is stored deep inside the Earth’s crust. They discovered how it travels up through a volcano and, when a change happens inside, it erupts as lava. To bring this to life, we created our own volcanoes. The children moulded brown playdough around a bottle to form the shape, then mixed soap, water, bicarbonate of soda, and food colouring to make the “magma”. Finally, we added vinegar and watched our volcanoes erupt with fizzy lava!

Reception loved being scientists and investigating how volcanoes explode. It was a fantastic hands‑on learning experience!
