This week in Philosophy for Children (P4C), Year 3 have been exploring big ideas, practising collaboration and thinking deeply about what brings people together.
What Does It Mean to Be Collaborative?
We kicked off by unpacking the word collaborative. The children shared their ideas about working as a team, listening carefully, helping others and building on each other’s thoughts. Their examples were thoughtful, kind and full of creativity!
Warming Up With “Would You Rather…?”
To get our minds warmed up, we played a lively round of Would You Rather?
There were lots of laughs, but also some brilliant reasoning as children explained their choices and challenged each other’s ideas in a respectful way. A perfect start to our thinking session!

Thinking About a Picture
We then looked at a thought‑provoking picture and shared our initial thoughts. The children were amazing at spotting details, asking questions and making connections.

What Is a Community?
Our main enquiry focused on the idea of community. We explored questions such as:
- What makes a community?
- Is our school a community?
- Is Year 3 a community?
The children shared their ideas about belonging, supporting each other, having shared goals and creating a place where everyone feels included.

Writing to Our Year 3 Friends
To bring our learning together, the children wrote letters to the other Year 3 class. They explained:
- What a community is
- How Year 3 works as a community
- What makes us a strong, caring community
- Why being part of a community matters
Their writing was thoughtful and full of pride- a real celebration of what Year 3 can achieve together.

Take‑Home Thinking!
To continue these wonderful discussions at home, the children have brought home two things:
A Family Discussion Slip
This slip invites you to talk together about what your family thinks a community is. We’d love to hear everyone’s ideas and see how views differ or connect. Please feel free to jot down any of your thoughts!

A “Concept and Connection” pictures
The children have also taken home a special concept and connection pictures. This is designed to spark deeper conversations about their learning. They can use it to explain how today’s ideas link together, what surprised them, and what they’re still wondering about.
It’s a lovely way for them to share their thinking with you and for you to see just how powerful their P4C discussions are becoming!

Thank you for reading and we hope you enjoy continuing these big conversations at home.
Happy P4C!
