As part of our topic “Community and Why Our School is Special,” we began the week with a tour around the school. The children explored all the different spaces that make our school such a special place- from our classrooms and library to the garden and hall. We discovered that our school has so much fascinating history behind it, and the children were amazed to learn about how it has changed and grown over the years. Ask your child to tell you one interesting fact they learned about our school’s past!

The next day, we went on a local walk to discover more about our wider community. We visited the Lansbury Estate and learned about the Festival of Britain and the Exhibition of Architecture. The children were fascinated to see how the local area has changed over time and enjoyed spotting familiar places along the way. It was a great opportunity to think about how our school fits into the wider community and why our local area is so important.

In Science, we explored the topic of light. We learned that you need light to see things and that without it, everything is dark! The children had so much fun investigating a mystery box, trying to guess what was inside when the light was blocked out. There were lots of curious faces, laughter, and great scientific thinking as they discovered how light helps us make sense of the world.

We also celebrated Poetry Week, which was all about skipping ropes! We read lively, rhythm-filled poems and then had a go at becoming poets ourselves. The class worked together to compose their very own skipping poem, full of bounce, rhyme, and energy. It was such a joy to see everyone performing their own poem with confidence and smiles- we definitely have some budding poets in Year 3!

We also used P4C (Philosophy for Children) to explore the idea of community and what it means to belong. We began by reflecting about our learning so far and thinking about the big question which connects our local community, festivals and where we live. Everyone shared their ideas, built on each other’s thoughts and gave reasons for their opinions. We learned how to listen carefully, take turns speaking, and show respect for different viewpoints. Through our discussion, we discovered that kindness, cooperation, and fairness help make our communities happy and supportive places.

It’s been a week full of exploration, creativity, and fun. We’ve captured lots of special moments along the way – take a look at our photos and videos below to see the children in action!

“A community is like a garden — it grows when everyone cares for it.”
