Goldsworthy had a fantastic DT morning filled with curiosity, teamwork, and lots of delicious colours. We spent the day learning about where food comes from, how to prepare ingredients safely, and why good hygiene matters when we’re working with food.

🛒 Exploring Our Local Community

To begin, we talked about our local area and the wonderful places where food is sold. The children shared what they know about Chrisp Street Market, local shops, and the different stalls that sell fruit, vegetables, bread, and more. This helped us understand that food doesn’t just appear in our kitchens – it comes from farms, markets, and people in our community who help prepare and sell it.

🧼 Learning About Hygiene

Before touching any ingredients, we practised how to wash our hands properly. The children followed each step carefully. We also talked about keeping our stations clean and why this keeps everyone safe and healthy.

🔪 Knife Safety Like a Chef

Next, we learned how to use knives safely. The children practised two important cutting holds:

  • Claw grip – fingers curled in to protect them
  • Bridge hold – making a bridge shape to hold food steady

We reminded ourselves of our knife‑safety rules:

  • Always cut away from your fingers
  • Keep your eyes on what you’re cutting
  • Hold the knife with two hands when passing it on
  • Ask for help if something feels tricky

🍎 Making Our Fruit & Veggie Salads

The highlight of the morning was preparing our own fruit salad and veggie salad. The children carefully chopped apples, bananas, cucumbers, peppers, and more – all while using their new cutting skills. They worked safely, hygienically, and with big smiles.

We talked about the colours, textures, and smells of the ingredients, and the children loved seeing how their salads came together.

🌟 What We Learned

By the end of the morning, our Goldsworthy chefs had learned to:

  • Understand where food comes from in our local community
  • Wash hands and keep a clean workspace
  • Use knives safely with the claw and bridge holds
  • Prepare simple dishes without using heat
  • Enjoy healthy foods and try new flavours

It was a joyful, hands‑on morning full of learning and creativity. We’re so proud of the children for their enthusiasm and care.

Thanks for reading!
