What a great way to end the week!
On Friday, Year 3 turned into real-life detectives, exploring our school and measuring all kinds of interesting places and objects. Clipboards in hand and rulers at the ready, the children set off on a Measurement Mission to discover lengths in centimetres, metres and millimetres.
Becoming Classroom Detectives
We began our adventure inside the classroom, where the children worked in pairs to measure:
- books
- tables
- whiteboard
- stationery
- even the teacher’s desk!
They used rulers to measure shorter objects and practised reading the tiny millimetre lines with care. Lots of mathematical talk filled the room as children compared estimates, checked accuracy, and discussed who got the closest guess.

Exploring the School Grounds
Once we were confident with smaller measurements, it was time to explore BIGGER spaces using metre sticks and the exciting trundle wheel.
Dinner Hall
The children quickly discovered that the dinner hall was far too long for a ruler!
Using a trundle wheel, they walked the length of the hall, counting each click as 1 metre. Teamwork was essential!

Key Stage 1 Playground
In the KS1 playground, children measured the path, the benches, and parts of the play zones.
The metre stick helped with medium distances, while the trundle wheel handled the long ones.
Key Stage 2 Playground
The KS2 playground brought even bigger challenges.
Children worked in groups to measure spaces accurately, keeping the trundle wheel straight and making sure their counting was careful.
The Shed
With their metre sticks, the class measured the height and width of the shed.
There were lots of excited guesses and even more surprised reactions when the real measurements were revealed!
The Football Pitch
Finally, the BIG mission – the football pitch!
Using the trundle wheel, children measured the huge length of the pitch.
They were amazed to find out how many metres it took to walk from one goal to the other!

Collaboration in Action
Throughout the lesson, the children showed outstanding collaboration:
- helping each other hold metre sticks steady
- sharing rulers
- reading the trundle wheel clicks together
- checking each other’s measurements
- agreeing on final answers as a team
It was wonderful to see math, teamwork and practical learning come together so brilliantly.
A Fantastic Finish
We ended the lesson by sharing our discoveries and celebrating our hard work.
Year 3 agreed that being measurement detectives was one of the most exciting activities of the term.
Well done, Year 3!
You explored, investigated, measured, estimated, and collaborated like true mathematicians.
We can’t wait to see where your learning takes you next!
