In Kahlo Class this term, we are learning about materials and their properties in our science lessons.

We started the topic by investigating the properties that different materials have. The class knew lots of materials from their prior science learning (glass, plastic, wood, metal, wool, cotton, rubber) and we learnt that properties are qualities of the materials that make them useful for certain things.

Materials can be hard or soft, soluble or insoluble, flexible or rigid, transparent or opaque, magnetic or not and thermal and electrical conductors or insulators.

We used magnets to test which materials were magnetic
We recorded the investigation in a table and used our science knowledge organisers to help clarify the properties
We discussed what we found out as a class
There were lots of questions about which materials were soluble (dissolve in water) or insoluble (do not dissolve). So, we set up an experiment to observe over time
The class check it every morning to see if the materials (wooden pencil, plastic pen and paper) have dissolved
They predicted that the paper would dissolve and the pen and pencil would not
Yusuf was surprised the paper did not dissolve over night!
We are interested to explore more about soluble and insoluble materials in our science lessons!
