Howard Carter (1874-1939), is well-known for being the British archaeologist and Egyptologist who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. However, did you know that he was also an artist? The University of Oxford have one of Carter’s sketchbooks in their collection containing many beautiful watercolour paintings of birds. Birds were deeply important in ancient Egypt as symbols of power, religious concepts, and the afterlife.
