On Tuesday 19th May, year 6 was able to take part in the age-old tradition of mud larking! It was a rainy Tuesday morning, but everyone was excited to learn more about the river Thames and the treasures hidden in the foreshore. Our guide told us a lot about the history of the river, from the ancient Romans to today, and, after a safety talk, we were on our way to search for some hidden treasures.
We also used a key to help us identify some of our finds.

We found some potentially very old piece of leather that could have been the bottom of a shoe. Simon said it could have been 100s of years old!

We also took part in some acting. Children pretended to be Victorian era children with a job at a tannery. Kye had the lovely job of stomping on the mixture, but at least he was paid after!
Our mudlarking adventure prompted lots of discussions, and you can join in the debate as well. Consider one of our questions, discuss it with someone at home perhaps, then share your thoughts with us at p4c@lansburylawrence.org
- Can objects tell stories even if they can’t speak?
- If you discover something special, should you keep it, share it, or return it? If you return it, who should you return it to?
- What makes something worth saving?
