Year 1 have had a wonderful start to the Autumn term exploring the big idea of community. We’ve been learning what a community is, who helps us, and how we all play an important part in making our school and local area a happy place to live and learn. Through stories, discussions, and creative activities, the children have been discovering the importance of kindness, teamwork and belonging.

To celebrate our class identity, Goldsworthy, the children created beautiful front covers using autumn leaves, twigs and sticks, inspired by the natural materials used by artist Andy Goldsworthy. They carefully arranged their collections to represent our class and the idea that every piece, just like every person, contributes to something special. The children loved exploring textures, colours and patterns from nature, and their finished covers look fantastic.
As part of our learning about community, Year 1 enjoyed reading The Tiger Who Came to Tea. We talked about how the tiger used all of Sophie’s tea and food, and this inspired us to think about what we would need if we had to go shopping to replace everything. The children shared brilliant ideas about different kinds of tea, snacks and items they would buy, linking this to our understanding of shops and the people who help us in our community. We then used these ideas to create our own versions of new foods and shopping lists. The children loved combining storytelling with real‑life experiences from our local community, as well as bringing the community to life in our construction area.

Throughout Autumn 1, continuous provision remains an important part of our learning. This gives the children opportunities to develop their creativity, imagination, fine motor skills, communication, problem-solving and building skills, while also allowing them to apply their learning independently through play and exploration.
Well done Goldsworthy, for a brilliant start.
