To help them discover how different marks can be made in clay, the children experimented with a range of natural and familiar tools. They used sticks, leaves, and a knife tool to press, carve, scratch, and print patterns into their clay.
Each tool created a different effect, and the children loved noticing how the textures changed depending on the pressure and movement they used.
They also learned some important art vocabulary, including shape (2D), form (3D), and impression. It was wonderful to hear them using these words confidently as they talked about their creations.
Lots of impressions and details!
Tthe children shared how much they enjoyed making their textured clay artwork. They were excited to take their creations home and were truly proud of what they had made.

The children also spent time writing their own reflections about their clay work. They thought carefully about what they made and how they made it. They explained the tools they used to create different impressions, such as sticks, leaves, or a knife tool. They described what they noticed when they looked closely at their finished art and shared ideas about how they might improve their work next time. It was wonderful to see them thinking like real artists, taking pride in their creations and reflecting thoughtfully on their learning.
