Year Six took a break from SATS prepration to join the rest of the school for DT Day. Our Wider Curriculum topic this term is Rivers, and especially the River Thames. So on Monday, Year Six were challenged to become bridge engineers for the day. Following in the footsteps of our class artist Zara Hadid herself, we began with drawing designs using maths knowledge to find the strongest shapes and artistic expression to find the most beautiful. Each student chose one of the styles of bridge found all across the world – truss, arch, beam and suspension bridges – to name a few!

Beginning with designs, they moved on to building their own structures from a pile of recycled materials. Here some students will share how they built their bridges:

In DT day we built bridges. It was hard to hold up the bridge with sticks of plywood. We had to use plasticine to stick the lolipop sticks and wood.We also used cardboared and masking tape to help make the bridge. Some people used paper straws plywood and sticks to help make the bridge stand.I used plywood cardboared and masking tape to help make my bridge sturdy. We tested the bridge by putting a train on top and it held the wait. Lots of people built diffrent types of bridges. They made truss, triangular, suspension, beam, and arch bridges. The easy part was getting the materials. The only hard part was there wasnt enough plasticine and tape to go round fo everyone so we worked in groups but only some by themselves, also the other hard thing was forming the bridge. We had to make it sturdy. We had to make sure our bridge was abe to hold weight.

Today in DT,we built bridges, and to make the bridges we used; lolipop sticks, straws, clay and many more items. I used straws to make a triangle then taped them together. The first time the straws fell down i used masking tape to stick them on,and the second time it happend i used plasticine, which made is ten times stronger. This lesson was very fun it was quite tricky in the beginning but i got used to it in the end.
