On Monday, Delaunay enjoyed a day of DT Day where they explored what it means to be an architect and how designers bring their ideas to life. Inspired by the tall buildings of nearby Canary Wharf, the children set out to create their own impressive cardboard structures. We began by discussing how real buildings stay stable and what kinds of shapes help them stand tall. Working in pairs, the children then experimented with different ways to join pieces of cardboard securely before using this knowledge to begin constructing.

The children grabbed the opportunity to test, adjust and try again when their structures needed more support. As the cardboard buildings grew taller and designs became more imaginative, they all rose to the challenge of keeping their creations upright.

Many of the children proudly explained the purpose of each part of their building too, just like professional architects presenting their plans, and the corridor outside our classroom was eventually transformed into a mini skyline filled with unique cardboard creations – we called it Delaunay Wharf.

The children finished by evaluating what worked well and what they might change next time. Our discussions also helped us see that we had displayed great teamwork, creativity and resilience throughout the whole project.
