This term, our Year 3 scientists have been on an exciting journey exploring the fascinating world beneath our feet!

Exploring and Comparing Rocks
We kicked things off by becoming rock detectives! The children examined different types of rocks- smooth, rough, shiny, and dull. We also discovered how each one tells a story about the Earth. From sparkly crystals to rugged sandstone, they learned that rocks aren’t just ordinary but they are actually nature’s building blocks.

Investigating Soil
Next, we got our hands dirty (literally!) as we explored soil. The children discovered that soil isn’t just “dirt”—it’s full of life and layers. They compared sandy soil, clay soil, and peat, learning how each type affects plants and water. There were lots of “wow” moments as they realized how important soil is for everything that grows.

Curiosity filled the classroom during these lessons! The children asked thoughtful questions, made predictions and shared their discoveries with enthusiasm. You’ll see it all in the photos- muddy hands, shiny rocks, and plenty of big smiles.

Exploring Foils
Finally, we had fun experimenting with foils! The children explored how different materials can change shape and reflect light. It was a brilliant way to think about properties and uses of materials in everyday life.

Did You Know?
Some rocks are over 4 billion years old- that’s older than the dinosaurs!

Science is all about exploring, questioning and discovering and Year 3 have shown they’re natural scientists. As we wrap up this blog, we hope you enjoyed seeing their curiosity in action. From muddy hands to shiny rocks, these investigations were just the beginning. There’s so much more to explore!

As Tim Minchin once said, “Science is simply the word we use to describe a method of organising our curiosity.” Year 3 have clearly embraced that spirit!
