This summer term, Hamilton Class have been busy exploring the wonderful world of mini-beasts! We have been learning all about different insects and creatures, their special features, and the habitats they live in. The children discovered that mini-beasts can be found both indoors and outdoors, including spiders, which can often be found spinning their webs in quiet corners.
As part of our learning, we enjoyed reading the story The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle. We talked about how hard the spider worked to create her beautiful web and discussed why spiders are such fascinating creatures. Inspired by the story, the children created their own spiders using a variety of materials, including paint, paper plates, paper, and string. Their creative artwork was fantastic and showcased their imagination and growing understanding of mini-beasts.
We also became nature detectives during our mini-beast hunt in the garden. The children searched for different creatures and were delighted to find lots of snails. We learned that snails carry their homes on their backs and hide inside their shells when they feel frightened or unsafe. We were also lucky enough to spot some beautiful butterflies. This led to discussions about life cycles, and the children learned that caterpillars eventually transform into butterflies. We discovered that both caterpillars and butterflies enjoy warmer weather, making summer the perfect time to see them outdoors.
After learning so many fascinating facts, Hamilton Class worked together to create a Mini-Beast Diary. We recorded what we had seen, discussed what makes each mini-beast special, and compared the different creatures we had found. The children then used their knowledge to write their own pieces about mini-beasts and proudly illustrated their work with detailed drawings.
Hamilton Class have shown fantastic enthusiasm throughout this topic and have produced some amazing writing. We are incredibly proud of how much they have learnt and how confidently they shared their ideas. A huge well done to all of Hamilton Class for being such curious, creative, and enthusiastic learners!
