Last Tuesday, Year 1 Kapoor Class practised dribbling the ball from one cone to another. The aim was to stay in ‘control’ of the ball by using skills like thinking about their intensity of kicks and most importantly their pace.

First children discussed the definition of ‘control.’ Zakai and Ubaid whose favourite sport is football, modelled to the whole class what that looked like on the field with a ball. Their full concentration was on the ball and the whole class noticed this when we discussed what they saw.

Before heading out to the field, we discussed the importance of team work, listening to each other and encouraging our friends never to give up.

Then, we headed outside and children worked in pairs to dribble the ball from one cone to another; providing guidance when needed. For example, Partner A was responsible for dribbling the ball across the field, while Partner B observed the pace of kicks and learned what worked and did not work so much. They encouraged each other to keep going even when some found it challenging to control the ball – it is trickier than you think!

Children are dribbling the ball with full concerntration.

After all pairs had a go at dribbling the ball, we formed a circle and reflected with out partners on how they found it. Some shared it was easy and others said it was challenging. So, we discussed ‘what made it challenging/easy?’ Again, they talked to their partners and learned that if they slow down the pace then they have more control of the ball. This is because it gives them more time to think about how to catch and move the ball. Others said smaller kicks are better than strong kicks because the ball moves out of the line too fast! Therefore, gentle and slower kicks allows better control of the ball for successful dribbling.

Children worked as a team to master controlling the ball. They were resilient as they did not give up when they found it challenging! Well done Year 1 Kapoor Class!
