This week in Year 3, we had a very special reason to celebrate- Sir David Attenborough turning 100!
Inspired by his incredible work protecting our planet, the children took part in a thoughtful and powerful P4C lesson all about caring for the Earth.
Learning About Our World
The children explored the impact of ocean and land pollution, discovering how plastic and waste harm animals and habitats. We discussed important questions such as:
- Who is responsible for protecting the planet?
- Can humans change their habits?
- What would the world be like if nature could speak?
There were some fantastic ideas and debates, showing just how deeply the children care about the environment.
Becoming Nature
To bring our learning to life, the children imagined something very powerful…
What if they were nature?
Taking on the role of oceans, forests, animals, trees and even the Earth itself, they wrote persuasive letters to humans. These letters were full of emotion, creativity and important messages.
We were so impressed by their thoughtful writing, including lines such as:
- Asking humans to stop polluting the seas
- Pleading for forests to be protected
- Reminding people that animals need safe homes
The children used strong vocabulary and expressive language, just like real environmental activists!
Powerful Voices
The letters showed:
✔ Empathy for the natural world
✔ Understanding of environmental issues
✔ Confidence in sharing opinions
✔ Imaginative and purposeful writing
It was amazing to see the children use their voices so confidently to speak up for the planet- just like Sir David Attenborough has done for so many years.

We even practiced a song called “Earth is home to you and me”!
Looking Ahead
This lesson helped the children understand that even small actions can make a big difference. Whether it’s recycling, using less plastic or caring for nature, they are already thinking about how they can help protect the world around them.
“The natural world is the greatest source of excitement, the greatest source of visual beauty, the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living.” Sir David Attenborough
