The 4 Dom Challenge

Today, our brilliant Year 3s put their thinking caps on for a challenge that required more than just maths skills – it was all about teamwork, communication, and a whole lot of resilience!

Using just four dominoes, the children had to create a square where each side added up to the same number of dots. Sounds easy? Think again! It took some serious trial and improvement, reflection, and collaboration to crack the code.

Each team took on specific roles:
Leader– keeping the team focused
Builder– putting the dominoes in place
Checker– making sure the solution was correct
Reporter– sharing the team’s strategy and learning

Here’s a snapshot from our lesson:

Here’s what some of our young problem-solvers had to say:

  • “We had to keep trying different ways- it didn’t work the first time but we didn’t give up!” – Anna
  • “I was the checker and I had to make sure the sides matched. We had to be really reflective.” – Miraj
  • “We used teamwork and even when it got tricky, we encouraged each other.” – Adiyan
  • “I liked how we got better each time. It was all about trial and improvement!” – Nahiya

Why Not Try This At Home?

Why Not Try This At Home?

Want to challenge yourself at home? Try recreating the 4 Dom puzzle!

How to play:

  • Use a set of dominoes (or draw your own!).
  • Try to arrange four dominoes to form a square.
  • Each side of the square must add up to the same number of dots.

Can your family find more than one solution? Who will be the leader, checker, builder, and reporter at home?

Well done year 3s and keep being amazing, thinkers!
